Speaking to broadcaster Piers Morgan on TV show Good Morning Britain, Thomas seemed contrite over all the pain he’d caused his daughter, but didn’t appear chastened enough by his past dramas to keep his lips firmly sealed.
Complaining that the scandal over his involvement in posed paparazzi photos had reduced him to a 'footnote in one of the greatest moments in history', Thomas said he regretted his controversial actions.
He also spoke of his series of phone calls with Prince Harry ahead of the wedding, in which he had asked for Meghan’s hand in marriage.
'Harry asked for her hand on the phone and I said: “You are a gentleman, promise me you will never raise your hand against my daughter and of course I will grant you my permission”.'
Thomas said that Meghan had 'been a princess since the day she was born', gushing: 'He made a good pick, didn't he?'.
Although he describes his scandalous behavior as a ‘serious mistake’ for which he had apologised to the couple, Thomas went on to detail aspects of his private conversations with Harry, saying the royal is 'open to the experiment of Brexit' and apparently feels President Donald Trump should be 'given a chance'.
The royal family are required to remain neutral on political matters and do not usually discuss them in public.
Speaking of watching the wedding on TV, Thomas thanked Prince Charles for stepping into his place, and said of his daughter, 'She was beautiful. I cried a little watching her. I was very proud and I couldn't see a better moment in my life. The whole world was watching my daughter.
'The unfortunate thing now is that I'm a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history instead of a dad walking his daughter down the aisle.
'It was a very emotional moment. I regretted it because I really wanted to walk her down the aisle. But I'm thankful for how it all went'.
And in a final word of thanks, he added of Prince Charles, 'I can't think of a better replacement than Mr Charles. He looked very handsome. I was jealous, I wish it was me but thank god he was there and I thank him for that'.
It remains to be seen if Harry and Meghan – or Charles - will speak to Thomas again anytime soon.
